Expanded Mission Statement

NCNM University’s mission is to train in physical medicine and applied health sciences creating doctors and other practitioners to practice in allied healthcare. NCNM University offers instruction of the DN program using specialized connective tissue manipulation according to the Oakley Smith Naprapathic Method®, integrating the basic human sciences with the unique art of manual medicine, and to teach essential adjunctive protocols for Naprapathic evaluation and treatment, nutritional counseling, principles of rehabilitation, therapeutic exercise, and application of physical modalities. NCNM University also offers additional instruction in a variety of certification programs and continuing education programs to expand professional competencies in the area of practice management, connective tissue manipulation, therapeutic and rehabilitative exercise, postural counseling, nutritional counseling, and use of modalities such as: massage, heat, cold, light, water, radiant energy, electricity, sound and air, and assistive devices for the purpose of preventing, correcting and alleviating physical ailments and disabilities.

About NCNM-U

NCNM University is chartered by the State of Illinois and recognized by the Illinois Board of Higher Education to grant the degree, Doctor of Naprapathy (nuh-prah-pa-thee) (D.N.). NCNM-U also offer certifications and postgraduate continuing education. NCNM University, the oldest academic institution providing The Doctor of Naprapathy (nuh-prah-pa-thee) program, is approved by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. Graduates of the DN program are eligible to take the Illinois Written Clinical Competency Examination to become a licensed Doctor of Naprapathy (nuh-prah-pa-thee). The doctoral license is similar to the limited doctoral licenses that are granted to Optometrists, Podiatrists, and Dentists.

The first school was chartered in 1908 in Chicago, Illinois and was named “Oakley Smith School of Naprapathy (nuh-prah-pa-thee),” becoming the Chicago College of Naprapathy (nuh-prah-pa-thee) in 1912. Another school, the National College of Naprapathy (nuh-prah-pa-thee), was founded in Chicago in 1949. The two schools combined in 1971 to form the Chicago National College of Naprapathy (nuh-prah-pa-thee), then to form the National College of Naprapathic (na-pruh-pa-thick) Medicine and exist today as NCNM University.

NCNM University offers in addition to the Doctor of Naprapathy (nuh-prah-pa-thee) program, Certification programs such as Naprapathic (na-pruh-pa-thick) Assistant, Massage Therapy, Personal Trainer, Athletic Trainer and MicroVascular professional. The available certification programs offered by the institution range from 12-36 weeks for full completion. The pre-Naprapathy (nuh-prah-pa-thee) program taking 1 full year to complete. The pre-Naprapathy (nuh-prah-pa-thee) program prepares committed students of Naprapathic (na-pruh-pa-thick) medicine to the Naprapathic (na-pruh-pa-thick) doctoral degree. The doctor of Naprapathy (nuh-prah-pa-thee) program is a full-time, four-year program. Students take four or five classes per semester for the first three years.  Upon successful completion of the coursework, students sit for the NCNM Comprehensive Clinic Entrance Examination (CCEE). After successful passing of the CCEE students will serve a 12-month clinical internship allowing them to apply their knowledge, professional skill, and therapeutic techniques on patients in a supervised clinic setting.

A PHILOSOPHY OF NAPRAPATHIC EDUCATION

Naprapathic Medicine is primarily a system of therapeutic manipulation. Naprapaths contend that many functional disorders of the human body result from distortions in the interrelated structural, biochemical, and emotional balance of the normally self-regulating body. The early years of research and clinical application developed primarily the structural phase of therapeutics. Research determined that abnormal contracture of the ligaments and muscles connected to the spinal column affected spinal nerves and consequently their target connective tissues such as organs, glands, and blood vessels, altering their normal function.

Application of specific techniques to correct these connective tissue abnormalities were studied and developed, and a charting system unique to Naprapathic Medicine was instituted in order to record specific findings as well as the therapeutic responses appropriate to each type of connective tissue syndrome. Specific, reliable Naprapathic findings continue to guide the Doctor of Naprapathic Medicine to consistently normalize neurological function through precise manipulative technique.

Around the mid-20th century, Naprapathic Medicine also incorporated the biochemical phase of health. The chemistry of the human body is optimally in continuous process, adjusting to changes in the environment, diet, exercise, posture, redundant motion and individual stresses. A wide spectrum of biochemical components, including nutritional elements, hormones, enzymes, metabolic by-products and end-products are studied as integral factors toward the balance of the human body.

Doctors of Naprapathic Medicine remain person-oriented, taking time to explain procedures and conditions to the patient, and to enlist the patient’s participation in establishing daily healthy habits of exercise, correct posture, sound body.
